Russian socks pattern

Janette shared this pattern with us yesterday because she thought they were good socks and so easy to make because you use two needles. You do need to watch the video so you know how to fold them when you stitch them. Once mastered , you would be able to make all sorts of lovely socks with this pattern.

You can get written instructions here: bit.ly/russiansockspattern

The page is in Russian and at the top of the page are the Russian instructions. Scroll down a bit and the instructions are there in English. The video is also in Russian but you can turn the sound down and just watch so you can see how the socks are assembled.

Show and tell

show and tell 28th May

We couldn’t really have Show and Tell this week because there was kitchen refurbishment going on at our temporary venue and even though we could spin and chat it was really hard to have a meeting. We did have Look and View around the lovely big table and lots of good conversations were had there. There was so much to admire and so many beautiful things.

Sheila had finished her lovely autumn colour frilly scarf.

Marjorie had made a beanie in the style of the one the actresses wore in the movie, Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society. Also shared a book on carding & blending with her voucher from the Guild.

Jan had made 2 berets one in red, one in blue.

Cathy had knitted a Fair Isle beanie, and made the first crotcheted square of her blanket.

Marinaย  shared a jacket in blue moss stitch, a large thick red rug and a bag of dyed wool bought off the net.

Hilary had created 5 beanies of various colours and patterns.

Karin made a beautiful pair of socks in charcoal with a snowflake design around the cuff.

And our new member, Beth, sharedย  a stunning pair ofย  long felted boots in grey wool with deep rubber soles.

What a visual feast and inspiration it all was.

Winter cheer

colourful socksA couple of weeks ago our show and tell table was a strong stand against a dull winter’s day. The long, cold, dark winter had made us bring out the colour and cheer. Marjorie often works with soft, muted colours but this time she broke out her inner colour palate and brought some lovely socks she had knitted in spring colours and a bright neck scarf she had made from her own spun wool from Marie’s patternย . Clearly, we believe you can cheer yourself up by wearing colour.

Knitting socks

If you have never knitted socks before then this video will help you. Alexis had dyed some lovely speckled sock yarn and that got us all talking about socks and thinking we should make some . It was winter and very cold! Hand knitted socks are warm, comfortable and durable. There were discussions about how to turn the heel and how we did that. There were discussions about which needles to use and why. Some use dpns (double pointed needs ) and others used round needles. In the end you do what suits you. There was a lot of discussion about which yarn. 4ply is better unless you really want very thick socks. You also need some nylon mixed in with the yarn so the socks will last if you are going to be walking around in them inside shoes. Lots of socks are great just for indoor wear but if you want to use them as everyday wear they need a bit of nylon. it then came to colours…That was a long discussion. Everyone loves their own idea of sock colour and pattern and it is interesting how differently people think about something as unassuming as socks. They are now a thing!
