Maria uses ALL her yarn. She gathers the leftovers of different balls and then saves them for great projects. This is one of them. She has started making little grannie squares and then they grew…She had an assortment of small balls of yarn in bags so she could make the squares. What makes this blanket a stand out , though, are the colourful edging and the rounded corners. Suddenly it’s not just a grannie square blanket. it has some class and style. It’s the attention to detail which lifts Maria’s work out of the ordinary. That and her wonderful sense of fun and colour. It’s a warm, cheerful blanket.
Using oddments
We love our oddments. We make toys, blankets ,bags,ย gloves and socks from our oddments. Anything to use theย oddments creatively. This week we had some good uses of oddments. Cathy had gathered together oddments from merino tops, old bobbins and spun and plied the yarn with dark alpaca or onion dyed Border Leicester. Now she has some nice balls of yarn to work with in good colours. Marina had spun and plied the cotton we were offered to try if we had never spun cotton. She incorporated that yarn into a beautiful knitted top . She chose a commercial cotton to mix in and has spread her own spun cotton throughout the pattern. It looks so nice. Maria had some oddments from her yarn stash and she is crocheting a lovely granny blanket for a baby. So colourful and cheerful for the little one. It always makes a good challenge to gather oddments and work out how you are going to use them to make something good.
Ten stitch blanket
Wendy has got her ten stitch blanket up and running. One by one we are all coming around to it and all finding our way to do it. It is interesting how much a voyage of discover the ten stitch blanket is. Karin started us off last year with a workshop showing us the German short rows with wraps. Alexis brought along a blanket without the wraps so we could see that. Some got up and running and others were finding their way and some are still pondering the wonders of the ten stitch blanket. We like it because they are cosy and use up oddments. Once you master the techniques involved it ends up being an easy knit. You have to do it your own way and in your own time is what we have discovered. Wendy has been able to use her new needles from Equipment Day and she is loving it. Sometimes you have to try it and then unpick it and try something else. You cannot get going until you are happy.

Christmas ornaments
Might be just a wee bit to late for this Christmas, but no reason not to make these lovely ornaments ready for next Christmas while you are in the mood! The ones in the video are knitted.
